Mike

Mike's surgery went well today. No complications...smooth as can be. He is home now...high on pain pills and feeling fairly crappy...I guess that's what happens when they take an organ out of your body. :)

For those who don't know...Mike had his gallbladder out today. Hurray for more medical bills!!! :)(it's been a long day..plz excuse my terribly lame attempts at humor)

And I Quote...

"Fishing Cats are so sensitive. (pause) What does sensitive mean? (Mommy gives definition) Well, that's not what I meant to say at all. (pause) Fishing Cats are very sweet"...Grace, today, while staring eye to eye w/ a Fishing Cat, at the zoo( I LOVE that she gets out early every Wednesday). :)

AND...

"I love the smell of pitter-pat air. It smells like Capri-Sun"...Grace, today while driving to the zoo and looking out at the clouds heavy w/ rain.(we call that great right before rain smell the air takes on 'pitter-pat air').

AND...

"Dear God. Please be w/ Tanner and Madison tmrrw on their first day of Kindergarten."...Grace, tonight before bed.

Valkyrie

I woke early w/ the rain this morning, so decided to finish watching the movie "Valykrie"...

Nothing fancy, no major special effects, I wasn't completely convinced by the acting, but all of that didn't matter because the story made it worth my time. A true story based on a German military man by the name of Claus von Stauffenberg who, while part of Hitler's regime, despises what Hitler stands for and worries for the destruction of Germany. He becomes a part of the German resistance and sets up a plan to assassinate Hitler. His attempt stems from the inside, using Hitler's own emergency plan, Valkyrie, to take him down.

It is amazing to behold the blind obedience of Hitler's regime. It is a harsh reminder of how humans, by nature, are simply sheep...we go where we are lead, even if the leader is a lunatic. We are blinded by power and the people who have it. We forget how to think for ourselves.

This story is powerful and I am glad somebody stepped up to tell it on the big screen. I am now interested in learning more about these men who attempted to stand up to evil, so I guess that would be considered a victory for the movie makers...they got my attention and then some.

She Did It!

It's official...Grace is a Kindergartner now. :) We are now a slave of the school district...hee hee. ;)

Grace did so great this morning. No complaints, no tears, no hiding...she got ready, walked to school, got into line and promptly asked Mike and I to leave. Well, actually we asked her if she wanted us to stand in line w/ her or just go and she said, 'go, please.'...it was for the best because my voice cracked while telling her I loved her and saying goodbye, so I knew the dam was about to break!! We waited up on the hill til they went in and then I cried all the way home. :)

So Proud!

Too cute...

Pushing the little one...

Her 'strength'...I told her that if she felt lonely or scared that she could just look at this and remember that she is a strong, smart girl and that Mommy and Daddy love her very much. She got a big grin on her face. :)

'We're here!'

Waiting to go in...

There they go...

Kindergarten...Here We Come!

Had Open House at Grace's school tonight. She has the same teacher she had for round-up...the one I was hoping she would get, so that's a bonus! :) Mrs. Jarowski(I think I'm spelling that right). A mouthful of a name, but Grace is getting it.

Grace filled her cubby w/ her school supplies, put money in her lunch account and got a new school t-shirt...she is ready for Wed. :)

Surprisingly, Mommy is ready, too. :) Kind of tired of being weepy about it, so hopefully I can get through the first day w few tears. Grace just informed me she would just like me to drop her off the first day and not stand and wait w/ her. Okay. :)

She's gonna do great! :)

Her name is up there somewhere. :) She loves the Dalmatians, so that made her happy.

Her coat cubbie and her new backpack...

Her and Mrs. J...

Fishing

Just came across these pics and thought they were just too cute not to share...went fishing..a month ago...it was a beautiful day...perfect weather for sitting by the lake, torturing the poor little fish. Grace loves it! :)

The best part of fishing...

'Well, when I was a kid'...

It worked...it actually worked!!!

'It's cute, but I think I'll pass'...

'Well, alright, I'll touch it...hold still, would ya?'...

A perfect way to spend the afternoon.

Let's Google That...

One of my very favorite things about Grace's current age is the questions. Endless questions...why, what, how come. I realize just how little I know and how often I say 'Good question...let's Google that'. So, in honor of my ever inquiring girl, I plan to share some of our more interesting Google finds.

"Why do mosquitoes come out at night?"...Grace asked after trying to swim in her pool after 9pm.

Our googling adventure took us to an article w/ info provided by an entomologist by the name of Sandy Brogren(must give credit where credit is due....to this day, I still hear all my college profs in my head, threatening life and limb if proper credit isn't given...ugh..way too many writing classes under my belt). :)

After many studies, there are a number of ideas...the most logical of the group being that because they are so tiny they are very susceptible to heat. They go into a state of rest(they don't ever sleep) during the hot hours and come out during the cooler temps.

With a touch of humor I tell you that the busiest time for mosquitoes is approx. 35 mins after sunset..someone actually took the time to figure that out, really...

The most interesting theory(especially for psychology majors such as myself), is that it's a learned behavior. The mosquitoes have learned that evening is when there is a higher concentration of people available, so they have adjusted their schedules accordingly. Creepy and interesting all at once.

So, there you go. Maybe you learned something new, maybe you just wasted your time, either way Grace & I learned something, plus I got to chronicle one of her many questions. :)

Geesh...I really am a nerd. :)
